Frequently Asked Questions

Does Lead-Acid Battery performance drop as the battery gets lower?

Yes, in lead-acid. As a lead-acid battery depletes, the voltage drops, causing the forklift to move and lift slower (the "sluggish" end-of-shift feel). Lithium-ion maintains constant voltage—your forklift will perform at 100% speed and power whether the battery is at 90% or 10%.

  • Sunway Benefit: Maintain consistent productivity for your container loading and stacking tasks right up until the end of the shift.

What is "Opportunity Charging" and why can't lead-acid do it?

Opportunity charging allows you to plug in your forklift during short breaks (15–30 mins) to boost the battery.

  • Lithium-ion: Encourages this practice; it does not damage the battery and keeps the truck running 24/7.
  • Lead-acid: Requires a strict "8-8-8 rule" (8 hours use, 8 hours charge, 8 hours cool down). Plugging it in for short bursts will actually "cook" the battery and shorten its lifespan significantly.
  • Sunway Benefit: Our BYD rentals are perfect for multi-shift operations in Tuas or Jurong because they never need 8 hours of "cool down."

Why is Lithium-ion considered more cost-effective than Lead-Acid for rental?

While lead-acid batteries have a lower upfront price, they carry hidden costs in labor and downtime. A BYD Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery lasts 3,000–5,000 cycles, which is 3x longer than the 1,000–1,500 cycles of lead-acid. For a rental customer, this means a more reliable machine that won't lose power halfway through a shift.

  • Sunway Benefit: We exclusively offer BYD's LFP technology, which eliminates the need for expensive battery replacements and mid-shift swaps.

What is the difference between Electric, Diesel, and LPG forklifts?

Choosing a power source depends on your environment:

  • Electric: Best for indoor use, food & beverage, and pharma. Zero emissions and quiet.
  • Diesel: Best for outdoor construction sites and heavy-duty yards. High power but high emissions.
  • LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas): A middle ground, often used in well-ventilated factories that need 24/7 operation without waiting for a charge.

What maintenance is required for a BYD electric forklift?

BYD forklifts are virtually maintenance-free regarding the power system.

  • No Watering: You never need to top up electrolyte levels.
  • No Acid Spills: The batteries are sealed and non-toxic.
  • Fewer Moving Parts: Since there is no internal combustion engine, you save on oil filters, spark plugs, and belt replacements. Regular checks are only needed for hydraulic oils, tires, and brake pads, leading to much lower downtime.

Are BYD forklifts safe for indoor and cold storage use?

Yes. Since BYD forklifts are 100% electric, they produce zero emissions, making them perfect for indoor warehouses, food and beverage facilities, and pharmaceutical hubs in Singapore. Additionally, BYD batteries do not "off-gas" (release flammable hydrogen) during charging, so you don't need a specialized, ventilated charging room. Their stable chemical structure also allows them to perform reliably in cold storage environments down to -40°C.

What is the lifespan of a BYD forklift battery compared to lead-acid?

A BYD battery is designed to last the entire life of the truck. It typically retains over 75% capacity even after 4,000 cycles (roughly 10 years of heavy use). In contrast, lead-acid batteries usually need replacement every 3 to 5 years. This longevity significantly reduces the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for Singapore businesses, as there are no expensive battery replacement costs mid-way through the forklift's life.

How long does it take to charge a BYD electric forklift?

One of the main reasons companies switch to BYD forklifts is the ultra-fast charging capability. A BYD Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery can be fully charged in as little as 1 to 2 hours. Unlike traditional lead-acid forklifts that require 8 hours to charge and 8 hours to cool down, BYD allows for "opportunity charging"—meaning you can plug it in during a 15-minute tea break or a 45-minute lunch to keep it running for multiple shifts without swapping batteries.
